Old Albatross

This site is dedicated to waterfalls, mountains, an old aviators memories, with lots of poetic liberties, some just plain made up, and interesting places to visit.

Snake lide363 viewsAfter being flushed by RAT and Bol'dar, old Sneaky here, took an uncontrolled slide down to the bottom of Chestnut Falls, where I was, unfortunately, located.

After a short dance session both Oldalbatross and snake were fine.

Lower Panthertown Creek Falls358 viewsThe hike to the lower falls is pretty easy until the turn off below The Great Wall, then there is nothing that can be called a trail, just a few faded ribbons and a few clips.

This 0.2 mile bushwhack through a recent controlled burn I would rate difficult for those not accustomed to Bushwhacking.

Turn Right And Plunge351 viewsAfter leaving the upper falls the river enters a narrow, short gorge, turns right and plunges into the lower gorge.

Is it a rough hike? Just plain fun all the way down and back up, maybe moderate. Left my walker on top.

Bright Sunnny day at Chestnut351 viewsOne of those rare days of 70^ F, bright Sun and Crew Members Lou, Bol'Dar, RAT, spent on snake infested Chestnut Cove Branch Falls.

Not a good day for photography but, with this crew, who cares, there will be cloudy days for cameras but, not Oldalbatross.

Lower Little Lost Cove Falls350 viewsN 36.02166 W 081.82910

I saw a description of this falls that nearly discouraged me from going here. Glad I did not listen.

This is a very high waterfall that, even in low water, is spectacular.

At the upper falls, use the trail and don't take a short cut down the Butt Slide like we did, an you will have no trouble down and back. It is quiet strenuous though.

Monster In The Mist345 viewsWhitewater Falls NC just after heavy rains. The fog cleared like magic for about ten minutes allowing an old friend to get his first peak at the 400 ft. monster.

Just downstream is a duplicate but, a little harder to hike to.

Middle Falls ***344 viewsThe middle falls on Flat Laurel Creek is a *** because of the descent and ascent from the trail. Done worse but, it can be tricky.

The Lower Falls344 viewsThe lower Falls is about 20 ft or so but quiet pretty.
